2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Follows Poor Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the need for a distinct vision.
Ismailer stated that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire content from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to heart and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.
His management and background in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all eager to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.
David
Background of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and tests that shift every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can look forward to more updates as creation continues.
