A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
