Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
