Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
