The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing the public his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and clear fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts of American history.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it imply feigning the worst regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a mixture that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
