TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service revealed that it now features more than 1 bn AI-generated clips.
Trial and Implementation
The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global launch. This shift coincides with a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently illogical or bizarre.
Our research shows that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, ranging from digital art to educational videos, and we intend to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
The platform announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service tagged as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m videos are added to the app daily, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be capable of reduce or increase the amount of AI content they view by accessing the “manage topic” feature in the app and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter include politics, style, beauty, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
Its guidelines mandate content makers to identify convincing artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the app will henceforth add an artificially created label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This step is designed to help prevent users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
The company is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for specialists and organizations to develop educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations focused on educating programming and robotics.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has supported its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. It is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.
A company official stated that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.
“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to harmful content as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
