Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
